Henry Cavendish Henry is the son of Charles Cavendish, a reclusive scientist who lives on a remote Scottish island. Pitt Mackeson Pitt, who was born in Newport, is one of the fine Southern men of Missouri. He is a Bushwhacker in Black John's gang, and has assisted on many raids of Yankee bases in the South. He is the arch rival of Jake "Dutchie" Rodell, whom he despises for winning the favour of Black John. His main buddy is Turner Rawls, who was shot through both cheeks and now can hardly speak. Hobbies: Killing, shooting, winding up Dutchie, playing cards, riding his horse, insanity, swaggering, waving poncily, burning property, and yelling. Likes: His horse, Turner Rawls, the Bushwhackers, this fine Southern state of Missouri, Black John, Newport, and drinking in Newport. Dislikes: Dutchie's Chickeree, Dutchie, Holt, vitals, Jayhawkers, and being told not to go to Newport. Steerpike Steerpike lives in the castle of Gormenghast where he worked in the kitchens until his later teens. Steerpike resented this work and one day seized the chance to escaped. After meeting the Lady Fushcia, who he charmed and fascinated, he won himself a job as an assistant to Doctor Prunesquallor. It was here that he began to curry favour with castle officials and, eventually, the Groan family themselves. Hobbies: Killing, eating mouldy fruit, seducing, plotting to bring down the system from within, lurking and being sinister. Likes: Power, Fuschia, his cane, his flute, his catapult, monkeys, Doctor Prunesquallor, and equality.
